Stage/Activity 2. Oral or documentary research about offerings and altars to set up one.


Introduction

The purpose of this activity is for students to inquire through the oral tradition with relatives and / or neighbors about the day of the dead and investigate the cultural manifestations that give meaning to local, national and international expression.

2.1 The day of the dead

  • Participants investigate of the day of the dead in their place of origin.
  • Collectively write a descriptive text and upload it to the collaborative forum of the project.
  • Subsequently, participants receive comments from other teams about their texts in the forum.

2.2 The skulls

Participants gather information about the Mexican tradition of making skulls:

  • Literary, to identify its structure.
  • Sweet, to recognize its elaboration process.
  • And the “catrinas”, to find out their origin and the meaning of their representation.

Participants of the Oriental culture, retrieve information about their traditions:

  • Burning papers.
  • The blessing of the crops.
  • Floating lights.
  • Other manifestations in text, crafts, etcetera.

Participants from other places in the world:

  • Bring flowers to the cemetery (pantheon)
  • Traditional sweets of that date
  • Other traditions

- Each team shares research of their own traditions; it explains the importance of these traditions in your region.

- The participating teams elaborate their literary skulls; in addition to integrating an image gallery with the crafts of the day of the dead of your locality, you design by the teams. Each product will include a brief description.

- By teams, they share their evidence in the collaborative digital Wall of the project.

- In the forum, they comment the different works.

2.3 Cultural syncretism: Offerings

- Participants watch the animated video: Las ofrendas del día de muertos en México in México and the video Altar of the day of the dead.
- Each group of students investigates whether something similar to altars or offerings is made in their place of origin and how they are carried out. For example, the following video: watch video (Mexican case). - The teams identify the elements that make up their altars or offerings and explain the meaning for their local or national culture and traditions.
- Finally, they will assemble their altars or offerings; and will include images or a video of them with an explanation in the collaborative Wall of the project.
- Share your research results and comments about this activity in the forum.
