Presentation
"The pandemic reminded us that we are quite fragile; so the challenge we have as humanity is to reflect and improve; think about what we are doing with the planet. One of the main challenges, for Mexico and the world, is that environmental problems are addressed," says Ana Elena Escalante, director of the Institute of Ecology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Environmental degradation is the result of multiple phenomena such as: climate change, deforestation, desertification, loss of biodiversity, poor management of resources and pollution.
In addition to destroying the vitality of ecosystems, this degradation can also cause harm to human health and well-being, such as diseases resulting from poor air quality or poor water quality, food and water shortages, loss of arable land, and so on.
The effects and impacts of climate change aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic have intensified internationally and nationally, causing serious impacts on sustainable development and our ecosystems, therefore, environmental education becomes relevant to create a critical awareness that allows us to perceive the importance of environmental care as a fundamental point of economic, cultural and social aspects that allows them to act with individual and collective determination in the resolution of these problems.
Also, in this edition of the project, we will work with schools in other countries in English and Spanish, with the option to express messages in both languages; with this, we will promote the practice of a second language among Mexican students and vice versa, which will reinforce the subject of English and Spanish, respectively. In this way, the interdisciplinary and interactive character of the project is enriched.
